Tällä viikolla vietetty naisten päivä inspiroi mua kirjoittamaan postauksen naisten asemasta maailmalla. Naisten syrjintä on edelleen todellinen asia. Suomi on maailman kolmanneksi tasa-arvoisin maa ja silti siellä on edelleen epäkohtia sukupuolten välisessä tasa-arvossa. Ei liene siis yllätyksenä kenellekään, että maailmalla asiat voivat olla radikaalisti huonommin.
Kaikkinaisen naisiin kohdistuvan syrjinnän kieltävä sopimus hyväksyttiin YK:ssa vuonna 1979
Suomessa sopimus on otettu käyttöön 1986. Olin pöyristynyt tämän tiedon luettuani. Eli omat vanhempani ovat olleet ehtineet teini-ikään asti elämään maailmassa, jossa naisten syrjintää ei ollut kielletty? Minä synnyin seitsemän vuotta sen jälkeen kun Suomessa keksittiin, että olisi hyvä lailla puuttua naisten syrjintään? Hämmästyttävän tuore juttu.
Mitä naisten syrjinnän kieltävä sopimus sitten sisältää? Kokonaisuudessaan sopimuksen pääsette lukemaan tästä, mutta varoitan, se on aika pitkä. Siitä syystä referoin sopimuksen ytimen lyhyesti. Sopimuksen allekirjoittaneet valtiot lupaavat, että heidän perustuslakinsa varmistaa tasa-arvon sukupuolien välillä ja varmistavat sen toteutumisen käytännössä. Miehillä ja naisilla tulee muun muassa olla yhtäläiset mahdollisuudet työuraan, opiskeluun ja koulutukseen, osallistua urheiluun ja yhdyskuntatoimintaan. Miehillä ja naisilla on sama oikeus vapaasti valita aviopuolisonsa ja mennä avioliittoon vain omasta vapaasta tahdostaan. Näin esimerkiksi. Sopimuksen toteuttamista valvoo komitea.
Tässä vaiheessa varmaan kaikki tietävät, että sopimusta ei todellakaan noudateta joka paikassa. Sopimuksen on allekirjoittanut 188 YK-jäsenvaltiota. Valitettavasti en löytänyt tietoa siitä, miltä mailta allekirjoitus puuttuu. Sukupuolten välistä tasa-arvoa mittaava tilasto osoittaa, että vain kahdeksan prosenttia maailman naisista elää maissa, joiden arvosana on tilaston perusteella hyvä.
Pitäisikö olla huolissaan?
Naisten huonot oltavat maailmalla
Ensimmäisenä tulee mieleen yksi järkyttävimmistä naisten oikeuksien piittamaattomuuteen liittyvistä asioista, naisten silpominen. Olen viime aikoina perehtynyt asiaan entistä enemmän, sillä tekeillä olevan graduni aineisto sisältää silpomiseen liittyviä elementtejä. Jos joku ei vielä jostain syystä tiedä, mitä silpominen konkreettisesti tarkoittaa, niin lyhyt kertaus: tytön sukupuolielimet osittain tai kokonaan poistetaan ilman terveydellistä syytä. Usein tämä tapahtuu hämyisessä huoneessa, likaisilla välineillä, täysin ilman puudutusta. Tuliko tarpeeksi kamala mielikuva? Jep, ja siksi otinkin tämän yhdeksi isoksi esimerkiksi naisten oikeuksien puutteesta. Silpomisen oletetaan auttavan tyttöä elämään kunniallista elämää ja vähentävän hänen seksihalujaan niin, ettei tytölle tule mieleen hyppiä vieraiden miesten sänkyihin. Silpomisesta voit lukea lisää täältä, ja halutessasi voit lahjoittaa rahaa silpomisen vastaiseen työhön.
Monissa maissa, etenkin kehitysmaissa, naiset eivät myöskään todellakaan voi itse valita puolisoitaan. Pakkoavioliitot ovat valitettavasti edelleen nykypäivää, ja siinä ei paljoa kysytä tytön mielipidettä, kun perhe naittaa hänet usein huomattavasti vanhemmalle miehelle. Myös naisen oikeus koulunkäyntiin unohtuu edelleen monessa maassa. Naisen paikka on kotona, siivoojana, kokkina, lastenhoitajana, synnytyskoneena.
Naisten syrjintä ei kuitenkaan ole ongelma vain niissä kaukaisissa maissa, jossa asiat voivat muutenkin olla vähän rempallaan. Somessa on myrskynnyt, aiheesta, useita viikkoja Puolan tilanteen takia. Puolassa 90 prosenttia aborteista tehdään vedoten siihen, että sikiö on epämuodostunut. Nyt tämä syy on lailla kielletty, joten abortin mahdollisuus on miltei olematon.
Länteen katsahdettaessa voimme löytää Yhdysvalloista, tuosta maailman mahtavimmasta maasta, vielä rankemman toimenpiteen. Alabamassa nimittäin aborttia ei saa edes silloin, jos raskaus on saanut alkunsa raiskauksesta tai insestistä. Eli ensin rikotaan naisen itsemääräämisoikeutta omaan kehoonsa räikeällä tavalla, ja heti perään uudestaan. Vau.
Haluan nostaa vielä esiin Saudi-Arabian, jossa naisten oikeudet ovat aivan käsittämättömällä tolalla. Siellä naiset eivät muun muassa saa ilman miespuolisen holhoojansa lupaa hakea henkilöllisyystodistusta tai avata pankkitiliä. Naiset eivät voi vapaasti tavata vastakkaisen sukupuolen henkilöitä tai syödä ravintolassa. Konkreettisia esimerkkejä syrjinnästä
Edellä mainitut asiat ovat erittäin raskaita osoituksia naisten epätasa-arvosta maailmalla. Kuitenkin tasa-arvon puuttumista ja naisten oikeuksien poljentaa tapahtuu ihan päivittäisessä arkielämässä ilman, että sitä kaikki edes huomaa. Siksi poimin esiin muutamia esimerkkejä, joita olen itse tavalla tai toisella todistanut täysin maasta riippumatta (eli osa esimerkeistä on Suomesta). Näin naisten syrjintä muun muassa ilmenee:
Nainen joutuu jatkuvasti avioliitossaan puolisonsa pahoinpitelemäksi, mutta ei voi lähteä liitosta, sillä jäisi täysin tyhjän päälle niin sosiaalisesti kuin taloudellisestikin.
Nainen tulee puolisonsa pettämäksi, mutta ei voi lähteä liitosta, sillä menettäisi lapsensa ja asuntonsa, eikä naisen palkka riittäisi elämiseen, sillä vain mies voi käydä rahakkaissa töissä.
Tytön hiukset ajetaan kokonaan pois vasten tytön tahtoa.
Naisen kerrottuaan kokeneensa seksuaalista painostusta, pakotusta, hyväksikäyttöä tai muuta vastaavaa, täytyy sosiaalinen media naista syyllistävistä kommenteista.
Tyttö ei saa pelata jalkapalloa, koska se on poikien laji.
Seksuaalisesti aktiivinen nainen leimautuu jakorasiaksi.
Urheilukisoissa media keskittyy naisen urheilusuorituksen arvioinnin sijaan hänen ulkonäkönsä ja vaatetuksensa arviointiin.
Naiset eivät pääse osallistumaan päätöksentekoon, sillä se on miesten hommia.
Naisen ei ole mahdollista päästä valtion johtoon sukupuolensa takia.
Nainen ei saa olla oma itsensä, sillä naisen tulee olla sovelias ja hillitty.
Listaa voisi jatkaa pitkälle.
Miettikää, kaikki tämä vain siksi, että on sattunut syntymään naiseksi. Kukaan ei voi vaikuttaa elämänsä alkutaipaileilla siihen, mitä jalkojen välistä löytyy tai mitä kromosomeja kroppa pitää sisällään. Ja silti sitä pidetään syynä syrjintään. (Niiden naisten, joiden syntymäsukupuoli on mies, oikeuksista puhumista en edes yritä ympätä tähän tekstiin. Heihin kohdistuva syrjintä on aivan omassa sfääreissään ja ehdottoman vakava asia, johon kantaa ottaakseni pitäisi mun perehtyä asiaan paljon enemmän.)
Tämä on ehkä tärkein postaus, jonka olen tähän mennessä kirjoittanut. Kiitos sinulle, joka luit tänne asti. Muistathan, että tämä postaus käsittelee nimenomaan maailman epäkohtia naisten kohtelussa. Monessa paikassa naisia kohdellaan hyvin, ja tasa-arvo ei todellakaan ole valmis myöskään miesten kohtelussa. Tämä postaus ei kuitenkaan koskenut niitä asioita – se ei tarkoita, etteikö mielestäni muita epäkohtia ole olemassa.
Haluaisinkin kuulla teidän kokemuksia asioista. Millaisissa tilanteissa naisten oikeudet tai niiden puute on näkynyt arjessa? Te maailmaa kiertäneet, miten olette nähneet, että naisten syrjintä ilmenee maailmalla? Missä asioissa taas tasa-arvo on toteutunut yllättävän hyvin? Jakakaa tarinoitanne kommenttikentän puolella.
Olen syntynyt 70-luvun alussa ja koen aina olleeni tasa-arvoinen poikien/miesten kanssa. Olen asiakeskeisellä luonnontieteellisellä alalla, missä keskitytään olennaiseen. Olenkin aina vähän ihmetellyt kovasanaisia tasa-arvovalituksia, mutta myöhemmin olen oivaltanut, että kaikilla aloilla tilanne ei välttämättä ole yhtä hyvä. Osittain ollaan kuitenkin menty jo toiseen äärilaitaan, kun naisenemmistöistä hallitusta pidettiin ”tasa-arvoisena”. Nyt olisi aika pyrkiä kohti todellista tasa-arvoa, missä ei enää lasketa naisten tai miesten lukumääriä ja vaadita kiintiöitä, vaan missä osaaminen ratkaisee, ja keskinäinen arvostus ja kunnioitus vallitsee. Viimemainittu on hyvin tärkeää, että niin tytöt kuin pojatkin saavat kasvaa arvonsa tuntevaksi ihmisiksi. Lapset kyselevät esim. miksi ei ole miestenpäivää? Heidän kokemusmaailmastaan käsin ei tämä asia avaudu, vaikka kuinka selittäisi. Perspektiiviä tasa-arvokysymykseen antaa, jos lukee vaikkapa Saudi-Arabian naisten elämästä (esim. Prinsessa – elämä hunnun takana). Siellä ollaan kuin eri planeetalla. Miten voisimme edistää tasa-arvoa maailmalla. Se ei ole helppo tehtävä.
Erittäin hyvä, että koet olleesi aina tasa-arvoisesti kohdeltu. Toivottavasti näin on, että kohtelu on oikeasti ollut tasa-arvoista, eikä niin, että kohtelussa on ollut puutteita mutta koska ne ovat niin arkipäivää, niitä ei tule huomattua. Itse 90-luvun lapsena koen suurimmalta osalta saaneeni tasa-arvoista kohtelua. Kuitenkin muistan saaneeni moniakin kommentteja esimerkiksi jääkiekkoharrastuksestani ja joutuneeni naurun alaiseksi ”poikamaisten” kiinnostusten kohteideni vuoksi. Kuinka monta kertaa olenkaan saanut kuulla vähättelyä urheilutietämyksestäni, koska eihän se tyttöjä voi kiinnostaa. Silti en koe tulleeni pahasti syrjityksi – tuo on enemmän sellaista rakenteellista syrjintää, mitä ei ehkä huomaa, ennen kuin sille avaa silmät.
Munkaan mielestä selvästi toisen sukupuolen mukaan jaottunut hallitus ei ole tasa-arvoinen, jos sukupuoli on syy hallituspaikkaan. Ehkä näkisin tuon naisenemmistöisen hallituksen tasa-arvon juuri siinä, mitä itsekin sanoit: osaaminen ratkaisee ja vihdoin osaavien naisten esteeksi ei ole tullut heidän sukupuolensa, vaan paikat on jaettu osaamisen perusteella. Miestenpäivähän on tosiaan olemassa, sitä vietetään 19.11., mutta siitä ei tehdä yhtä suurta numeroa, sillä miesten oikeuksissa ei ole ollut yhtä paljon korjattavaa läpi maailmanhistorian kuin naisten. Ehdottomasti olen siitä samaa mieltä, että tasa-arvo ei tarkoita naisvaltaa asioissa vaan tasapuolista kohtelua kaikille. Lasten näkökulma on vielä niin puhdas ja utelias, että heille olisi tärkeää selittää – toki ymmärrän, että joskus selittäminenkään ei auta.
Viimeiseen asiaan yhdyn täysin. Helppo tehtävä tasa-arvon edistäminen ei ole, mutta äärimmäisen tärkeä.

Väittäisin, että työelämässä kokemani tasa-arvo on todellista, sillä olen asiaa kyllä pohtinut. Muissa yhteyksissä olen pari kertaa törmännyt ns. tytöttelyyn. Silloinen aito hämmästykseni kertonee siitä, että asenneilmapiiri oli minulle outo. Olen kiitollinen siitä arvostavasta ilmapiiristä, jossa olen saanut toimia, ja halusin kertoa, että sellaistakin on.
Siinä tapauksessa olen sitä mieltä että erittäin erittäin hienoa, että olet saanut olla tasa-arvoisissa työpaikoissa. Sellaisia tarvittaisiin ehdottomasti enemmän, ja hienoa, että niitä jo löytyy!
Tuohon tytöttelyyn olen törmännyt muuten itsekin monta kertaa, se on aina yhtä inhottavaa. Varsinkin asiakaspalvelutyössä sitä kuuli liikaa, ja niissä tilanteissa on hankala puolustautua.

Minä olen tullut hyvin kohdelluksi työpaikoilla. Muistan ainoastaan sen kerran kun en saanut hakemaani virkaa, rehtorin saatua tietää, että minulla on pieni lapsi. ”Hankit kuitenkin sille kaverin” hän tokaisi vaikka yritin todistella muuta ikäni vedoten. Tällaisetkin vaikeudet kaikkoavat iän myötä. Säästyin myös ikärasismilta mikä nykyään kohdistuu molempiin sukupuoliin.
Tämä on omaa mutuilua nyt, mutta naisten epätasa-arvonen kohtelu tuntuu Suomessa kohdistuvan erityisesti tyttöihin ja nuoriin naisiin. Tosin myös vanhemman ikäluokan naiset sortuvat helposti tytöttelyyn – ehkä tässä onkin kyse ikäjakaumasta? En tiedä, vaikea sanoa. Toivottavasti mennään joka suunnassa koko ajan enemmän kohti tasa-arvoa.

EU:n sisällä on yllättävän paljon vielä parantamisen varaa tasa-arvossa, vaikka luulisi sen olevan enemmän vähempikoulutettujen maiden ongelma. Tai näin oma järki sanoisi, mutta valitettavasti tasa-arvon puutetta on kaikkialla.
Tietysti naisten ja tyttöjen oikeuden ovat maailmanlaajuisesti todella iso ongelma. Usein naisten aseman parantaminen johtaa myös yleisesti elintason paranemiseen kyseisessä maassa. En itse lähtisi sanomaan niin, että Suomessa on saanut syrjiä naisia siihen saakka, kun tuo sopimus allekirjoitettiin. Suomi on ollut naisten oikeuksien kärkimaita todella pitkään ja hyvä niin.
Sitten sama huomio minullakin kuin Talvikilla. Minäkin pidän sitä hölmönä, että ”Suomen tasa-arvoisin hallitus” ja sitä mitataan sillä, miten suuri naisenemmistö siihen kuuluu. Mitä tulee noihin urheilulajeihin, niin uskon, että joidenkin urheilulajien osalta tytöt voinut saada vähätteleviä kommentteja. Toisaalta varmasti moni poika saa ilkeitä kommentteja, jos vaikka haluaa harrastaa balettia tai taitoluistelua.
Tärkeä aihe joka tapauksessa!
Joo, tuo ilmaus sallitusta syrjinnästä oli kärjistetty ihan tarkoituksellisesti. 🙂 Silti olen hämmentynyt siitä, että Suomessa laki on ratifioitu noin myöhään. Johtuuko sitten hitaasta lainsäädännön muokkaamismahdollisuudesta vai mistä. Tällä hetkellä Suomi taitaa tosiaan olla maailman kolmanneksi paras maa tasa-arvossa, mutta ei silti yletä vielä tuossa postauksessa mainitsemassani tilastossa luokkaan ”erinomainen”. Ja mitä nyt somesta lukee keskustelua ja peilaa omia kokemuksia, niin tehtävää Suomessakin riittää edelleen. Onneksi Suomi kuitenkin on sitä kärkipäätä!
Vastasinkin Talvikille jo ajatuksia tuosta, mutta tavallaan ymmärrän tuon naisvoittoisen hallituksen tasa-arvoisuuden ja samaan aikaan kyseenalaistan sitä. Kuitenkin itse koen juuri tasa-arvon siinä, että hallitukseen ja eduskuntaan on valittu vihdoin henkilöt ammattitaidon perusteella, ei sukupuolen. Tällöin myös naiset voivat nousta valtaan ja Suomi on tasa-arvoisempi, kun kaikilla on sukupuolesta riippumatta yhtäläiset mahdollisuudet.
Urheilussa ja harrastuksissa yleensäkin näkyy harmillisen paljon sukupuolittamista. Tätä olen kokenut itse hyvin paljon, sillä olen harrastanut jääkiekkoa sekä kaukalossa että katsomossa ja tiedän lajista paljon. Varsinkin lukiossa koin todella paljon vähättelyä, sillä naissukupuoli ja jääkiekko eivät monen mielestä millään sopineet yhteen – ja tässä tilanteessa väitän, että miehenä minua ei olisi syrjäytetty ja naureskeltu pois keskusteluista, vaan kyse oli nimenomaan sukupuolesta. Samoin kuulin paljon tätä ”pelaat jääkiekkoa, olet lesbo” kommentointia mikä nyt on ihan älytöntä. Mutta varmasti myös feminiiniseksi miellettyjä lajeja harrastavat pojat saavat myös vastaavia kommentteja ja ne ovat täysin yhtä väärin. Tässä asiassa olisikin tasa-arvon puolesta todella paljon petrattavaa.

Kolme vuotta sitten osallistuin Meksikossa naistenpäivän seminaariin, missä kuuli kyllä ihan järkyttäviä juttuja. Pari vuotta sitten taas satuin olemaan naistenpäivän aikaan Guatemalassa, missä osallistuin tapahtumaan ja mielenosoitukseen. Ainiin, ja maat, jotka eivät ole mukana tossa sopimuksessa on Iran, Palau, Somalia, Sudan, Tonga ja USA (sekä Vatikaani). Kiinan osallisuus on epävirallista. USA ei ole sitoutunut myöskään lasten oikeuksien toteuttamiseen.
Kävin heti lukemassa sun postauksen, mutta jostain syystä vastaaminen jäi. Mutta mahtavaa, että säkin tuot näitä esiin, tuo sun postaus oli todella mielenkiintoinen. Keski-Amerikan suunnilla varmasti naisten oikeudet ovat kyllä paljon pahemmassa jamassa kuin Pohjoismaissa.
Onpas mielenkiintoista, että USA ei ole kirjoittanut noita sopimuksia! Toisaalta en ole yllättynyt, Yhdysvallat kun ei varsinaisesti ole mikään tasa-arvon ihmemaa. Ehkä Palau yllätti myös – en oikein tiedä siitä maasta paljoakaan, mutta luulisi kaikkien ”järkevien” maiden allekirjoittavan? Sama Tonga. Somalia, Sudan ja Iran ovat ehkä muutenkin epävakaampia paikkoja, joten ne eivät niinkään yllättäneet.
Tärkeä kirjoitus, valitettavasti näitä epäkohtia esiintyy ympäri maailmaa myös Suomessakin eri kulttuurien parissa.
Hyvä esimerkki aiheesta on se, että kaveripariskuntani muutti Bahrainiin. Puolison oli palattava Suomeen, koska ei yksinkertaisesti voinut elää maassa, missä häntä ei välttämättä palveltu kaupoissa ollenkaan. On aika vaikea toimia ja elää, kun on toisten silmissä täysi nolla. No kävinhän minäkin Bahrainissa ja kyllähän siellä avautui silmät aika monelle epäkohdelle, mikä siinä maassa ja kulttuurissa on ongelmana – ei pelkästään naisten, vaan monen muunkin asian suhteen. Mutta todella monet epäkohdat johtuivat juurikin miesten ja naisten täydellisestä epäarvoisuudesta.
Kiitos, tätä aihetta tosiaan tulee nostaa esiin.
Aika järkyttävä esimerkki tuo Bahrain. Kiinnostaisi kyllä käydä itse paikan päällä kokemassa, niin oppisi taas arvostamaan omaa vapauttaan enemmän, niin kamalalta kuin tollanen arvostusshoppailumatkailu kuulostaakin. Olisin kyllä kaverisi tilanteessa varmasti tehnyt ihan samoin.
Sukupuolten välinen epätasa-arvo on kyllä oikeasti iso ongelmien aiheuttaja. Ja usein miesten olot voisivat parantua samalla kuin korjataan naisten oloja. Se tuntuu vaan välillä olevan ihmisten hankala käsittää.
Tärkeästä asiasta kirjoitit. Niin surullista luettavaa, kun puhutaan oikeasti sukupuoleen liittyvästä kaltoinkohtelusta ja tasa-arvon puuttumisesta. Kaikki ne asiat, jotka minulle ovat olleet itsestäänselviä, kuten vapaa seurustelu, opiskelu, päättäminen omasta kehosta, haluamani työn tekeminen, oikeus itsenäisyyteen, oikeus valittuun lapsettomuuteen, mahdollisuus matkustaa vaikka yksin, oikeus omiin tuloihin… listaa voisi jatkaa vaikka kuinka pitkälle, ovat vain haaveita monille naisille maailmassa. Tätä vasten vähän ärsyttää meillä välillä käytävä tasa-arvokeskustelu, jonka taso on usein sitä tasoa, että saako tytöillä olla vaaleanpunaisia vaatteita.
Oon samaa mieltä. Mitenkään vähättelemättä länsimaisten yhteiskuntien pieniä tasa-arvoeroja tai välillä esiintyvää misogyniaa, mutta kyllähän se joskus tuntuu aika vähäpätöiseltä näpertelyltä, kun ihmiset riitelee netissä jostain tosi-tv-hahmon käyttämistä sananmuodoista, ja niitä ylitulkitaan milloin mitenkin. Oikeesti täällä on asiat todella hyvin verrattuna moneen muuhun maahan, missä edes alkeellisimpia ihmisoikeuksia ei käytännössä ole ollenkaan.
Ymmärrän tämän näkökulman hyvin. Itse kyllä triggeröidyin silti myös tuosta Mannisen tapauksesta, niin törkeää puhetta oli häneltä eikä ymmärrä edelleenkään pyytää anteeksi. Tärkeä asia toden totta. Tähän pitäisi jokaisen omalta osaltaan pyrkiä vaikuttamaan, eli siis tasa-arvon toteutumiseen. Tuo listasi on aika kuvaava, ja noiden etuuksien olemassaoloa ei tule edes ajateltua – periaatteessa pitäisi arvostaa, mutta toisaalta ei tarvitsisi erikseen arvostaa, koska niiden tulisi olla itsestäänselvyyksiä.
Ymmärrän ärsytyksen Suomessa käytävän tasa-arvokeskustelun versus maailmalla olevat oikeat ongelmat, mutta kyllä mielestäni keskustelua on silti tärkeää käydä myös Suomen mittapuulla. Muuten täydelliseen tasa-arvoon ei koskaan päästä (ja tämä väriasia ärsyttää itseä henkilökohtaisesti kun tyttönä lempivärini ovat vihreä ja sininen ja aion niitä kyllä pukea tuleville lapsille sukupuolesta riippumatta). 🙂
